Pregnancy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Date:
July 24, 2020

For many pregnant women, the COVID-19 pandemic has raised new questions about how to get the care they need while staying healthy. Widespread cases and social distancing regulations have increased their anxiety about health care settings, which may discourage them from seeking routine prenatal or neonatal care. This can increase your patients’ overall risk or lead to new or worsening mental health issues.

Pregnant women might be at a higher risk for severe illness or hospitalization if they contract COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For this reason, patients who are expecting may need additional support to navigate their health during these unprecedented times.

If your patients are hesitant about giving birth in a hospital, remind them that medical settings remain the safest place to have their child, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations. They should also seek emergency care as needed when they are not in labor. Many emergency departments have an infection prevention plan that can be put into place if a patient calls before going.

Lastly, there are additional resources available to help your patients take care of their health during their pregnancy.

  • The Right Start Pregnancy Management Program is offered to your BlueShield patients at no cost to them. As part of the program, a registered nurse will support your patients in a way that complements the care you give. Health coaching and in-home care are also available for high-risk pregnancies. You can refer patients by calling 1-877-878-8785, option 2.
  • For patients with symptoms of COVID-19 who choose to breastfeed or express breast milk, guidelines are available on the CDC website at the links below.
  • If a patient is experiencing signs of depression, they may benefit from seeking behavioral health care. Many in-network counselors are now offering telehealth visits, and several are accepting new patients. You can also remind your BlueShield patients to take advantage of their Doctor on Demand benefit and talk to a therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist from the comfort of home by visiting the link below.

For additional questions about pregnancy or behavioral health, our care management staff is available at 1-877-878-8785, option 2.
