What is violent and abusive behavior?
Violence and abusive behavior is a serious public health problem that affects millions of Americans. There are many different types of violence against individuals, ranging from infants to the elderly. Although many survive, victims often suffer from physical, mental or emotional health problems. Below are a few common types of violence:
- Child Abuse and Neglect: This includes physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect of children under 18 years old - by an adult
- Youth Violence: Young people hurt their peers through fights, bullying, threats with weapons, and gang activity
- Elder Abuse: Physical, sexual, emotional abuse or neglect of an adult 60 years or older
- Intimate Partner Violence: Physical, sexual or psychological harm by a partner or spouse (current or former)
