Take Charge of Your Health

Date:

Take an active role in your health.

Taking an active role in your health care can improve the quality of care you and your family receive. Stay on top of your health by taking steps to prevent issues now, instead of waiting for issues to develop. The keys to prevention include scheduling your annual exams and health screenings and knowing what to discuss with your doctor.

What to schedule:

  • Physical exam and annual wellness visit
  • Annual lab work - check to see if you are due to have your blood sugar, cholesterol, or other tests done
  • Immunizations - Keep a record and ask your doctor if you are up to date
  • Dental Check-up - Healthy teeth contribute to overall health
  • Annual Eye Exam - including a glaucoma screening, and a dilated retinal exam if you are diabetic
  • Ask your doctor if you should have any other screenings, including colorectal cancer, bone density, or a Pap smear

What to discuss:

Bring a list of all your current medications, and any important information, and questions to your visit. It's important to be honest with your doctor. Points to discuss with your doctor include:

  • Which screenings apply to you and how often you should receive them
  • If your immunizations are up to date
  • Any changes to your health or lifestyle, or any changes in symptoms
  • Your medications - including how and when to take them, any side effects to be aware of, and what to do if you experience the side effects
  • If you need to follow up, ask when and with whom
