HMO and PPO Products Both Receive 4.5 out of 5 Stars

BlueShield of Northeastern New York announced that its HMO and PPO Medicare Advantage health plans each received a 4.5 Star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This reflects a half star increase for BlueShield’s HMO products for 2017.

CMS assigns Star ratings from one to five, with five being the highest. The rating system provides a way for consumers to objectively compare Medicare health plans based on 46 care and service quality measures including staying healthy, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service, and pharmacy services.

"A great deal of work is done each year to continuously improve the quality and service measures that impact our Star rating,” said Thomas Schenk, MD, Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, BlueShield of Northeastern New York. “We could not meet this high benchmark without the positive feedback from our members and the excellent quality that our network of physicians provides."

Over the past year, BlueShield has implemented a number of strategic partnerships aimed at assisting members and providers to identify and take action on closing needed gaps in care, addressing member and provider experiences, improving data oversight and compliance, as well as enhanced clinical programming.

The Star ratings are posted at www.medicare.gov where beneficiaries can shop and compare plans beginning Saturday, October 15.
