A Healthy Pregnancy is a Healthy Start for your Baby

Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful. Doing all you can to stay healthy during pregnancy can give you peace of mind and give your baby a healthy start in life. If you can, visit your doctor before you become pregnant. After you become pregnant, start prenatal care early. Taking care of yourself before and during pregnancy is beneficial for your health and that of your baby. Be sure to talk with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

Being open with your doctor will help with:

  • Controlling chronic conditions 
  • Medication management 
  • Proper nutrition 
  • Appropriate health screenings 

For your health and that of your baby, take care of yourself before and during pregnancy. For a healthy pregnancy:

  • Take a daily prenatal vitamin that includes at least 400 mcg of folic acid
  • Go to all checkups
  • Avoid tobacco, alcohol and drug use
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Avoid foods including soft cheeses, undercooked meats, fish (sushi), shellfish, and raw eggs
  • Avoid drinking unpasteurized milk and juice, apple cider, and large amounts of caffeinated beverages
  • Exercise regularly
  • Discuss all medications you take with your doctor
  • Do not clean or change your cat's litter box
